Must-Have Shopify Apps for E-Commerce Stores

Shopify is an amazing out of the box web solution, allowing anyone to build their own website quickly, easily and with little to no coding experience. One of the reasons that we love the platform so much, is the vast array of templates, themes and apps that allow you to pick and choose what functionality you need, and nothing you don’t. Having recently advised some e-commerce clients on their own websites and app possibilities, we thought we’d compile our list of ‘must-have’ apps for Shopify websites. We do not earn any money from the below links; we’re just sharing what we’ve found worked best for our clients.

Okay, so you’ve built your Shopify website and starting to think about what apps might help make your online store more successful. Our first recommendation is something practical to save you time with order fulfilment… Starshipit is an integrated shipping and tracking app that generates courier labels in bulk and sends them directly to your thermal printer or downloads them as a PDF on your computer. The app will also notify your customers of their order status with text messages and emails meaning all you need to worry about is picking and sending. The app integrates with Australia Post, Fastway, DHL, DPD UK, Royal Mail & more.


The next tip is to set up a review app for your products or services. More than two-thirds of consumers (68%) say they read online reviews about products or services they’re interested in. On average, people read seven reviews before deciding to make a purchase. What review app you choose, will come down to your requirements but here are a few options:

  1. Loox allows you to easily collect photo reviews

  2. Yotpo is one of the bigger ones, and really good at helping to proactively generate reviews from your customers. It also includes SMS bump which might be helpful for your ongoing customer relationship management (CRM).

  3. Lastly, Reputon is good for aggregating rather than generating reviews. The app aggregates existing reviews from platforms such as Google, Facebook and Trustpilot, meaning the potential impact is broader than just your website. The app is quite clever in that it directs less satisfied customers to its own feedback form, minimizing the chances of bad reviews.

Next up we have two different apps, with different functionality but both aimed at growing the average order value (AOV) on your website. The first is Bold Upsell, which utilises Artificial Intelligence (AI) to upsell & cross-sell products or services. This tactic is one of the reasons Jess Bezos (Amazon Founder) is the richest person in the world… Jump onto Amazon, view a product page and you’ll notice the sections titled, ‘Customers who bought this item also bought’ and ‘What other items do customers buy after viewing this item?’ seemingly helping you but in no uncertain terms aiming to increase the amount you spend. The other app in this realm is Free Shipping Bar. As the name suggests, it provides a visual cue to shoppers on your site as to how much more they need to spend to unlock free shipping. Postage fees are one of the largest barriers to shopping online so this mechanic will incentivise your shoppers to spend more in order to avoid shipping fees.


Subscription business and pricing models have boomed with the growth of e-commerce. Netflix, Shopify and Dollar Shaving Club are a few examples but there are plenty more that have turned to processing recurring payments as a way of growing and extending their lifetime customer value. If this suits your business model, consider an app like Bold Subscriptions as a way of providing consumers with the option to receive these goods or services ongoing with corresponding payments. Recharge is another app that provides the option for consumers to manage their subscriptions through a customer portal.


Pushing users down the buyer’s funnel towards brand loyalty should be your ultimate objective. It’s far cheaper to retain your existing customers than it is attracting new ones. But what if there was a way to do both? Enter Smile, a solution to turn any customer into a brand advocate and referrer. This app incentivises satisfied customers to refer your business or brand – and in doing so rewards both the new and existing customer. Think of it as digitised work-of-mouth marketing, both trusted and effective.


Lastly, any website isn’t complete without an integrated email / eCRM platform. To read more on the importance of email, check out our blog here. Email marketing is a great way to keep your customers up to date with news, events, product releases and more. They’re also a great tool to help minimise cart abandonment on your site. I.e. if someone adds something to their cart but doesn’t complete check-out, they get an automated email with a prompt to complete their purchase. Shopify itself allows you to send one email as part of their standard functionality but these tools usually allow a much more sophisticated approach:

  1. Jilt: automated emails, simple email setup and design

  2. Active Campaign is a very popular tool, although it’s a more complete eCRM program (e.g. Customer Segmentation).

  3. Omnisend provides pre-built automation workflows (e.g. triggered basket abandonment emails) as well as standard eDM design.
